Why It Matters
Incapacity can happen suddenly.
Without a durable power of attorney and a healthcare power of attorney, a single bad day can lock your family out of the decisions that matter most.
These two documents appoint the people you trust and state your wishes in writing, so your family is not left guessing and your care team knows exactly what to do. They matter most if you have substantial assets that need managing, or specific medical beliefs about surgeries, medications, or life support.
Without them, three things tend to go wrong at once:
- Bills go unpaid and accounts can be frozen while no one has authority to act.
- Hospitals fall back on default policies that may not reflect your values.
- Even a loving child can be blocked from deciding for a parent, despite knowing their wishes.
